Plan by region and by day
Use broad climate information to choose a route, then rely on current local forecasts for daily decisions. Ask accommodation staff about neighborhood flooding, road access and conditions at outdoor sites. Put weather-sensitive activities early in a multi-day stay so they can move if necessary.
- Save one or two indoor alternatives in each base.
- Protect documents and electronics inside the bag.
- Wear shoes with reliable grip on wet surfaces.
- Allow more time for road and airport transfers.
- Never enter moving floodwater or a closed trail.
Know when flexibility becomes a safety decision
Heavy rain can affect mountain roads, caves, beaches, rivers and low-lying urban streets. Follow closures and advice from local authorities and operators. Do not pressure a driver or guide to continue when conditions have changed. Travel insurance terms, transport updates and emergency contacts should be checked before the trip, not during a disruption.
Museums, cafés, craft studios, covered markets and long lunches can carry a wet day. Treat them as part of the destination rather than consolation prizes. A flexible traveler often discovers a quieter version of a city while waiting for the sky to clear.
